Golden Eagle Workshop – Sweden
Wednesday 11th – Saturday 14th December
Three people maximum – One Place Left
All images below were taken by myself in the same hides that we are going to in Sweden, I fully expect everyone that goes to get similar images.
Check out my gallery here where more pictures will be added within the next 2 weeks.
This workshop is for 4 nights, 3 days photography
We will travel to Sweden on the Wednesday then spend Thursday, Friday and Saturday in hides departing on Sunday morning back to the UK
Photographing Golden Eagles and other wildlife that are around the hides is often challenging especially when snowing as your meter reading will be all over the place but I’ll be on hand to give expert advice on settings and to get your white balance correct throughout the 3 days to enable you to get the very best images possible
Weather conditions is usually very cold, often upto minus 18 degrees so we need to wrap up with plenty of layers
There is however a heater or log burner in hides so you can hopefully stay warm during the day
The day usually starts early leaving our accommodation at approx 5am and ending the session approx 5.30pm
We have a 10 minutes walk to the hides
Apart from Golden Eagles we have plenty of other birds to keep us occupied and time to practice getting your camera settings right
We have Bullfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Headed Woodpecker, Willow Tit, Jays and so on, oh, and of course the gorgeous Red Fox with its bushy winter coat
If your lucky we may even see a Red Squirrel
1) Each photographer has two windows so 2 camera body’s and lenses are required
2) Window 1) for close ups of the Golden Eagle and also other birds, I used my 100/400 for this
3) Window 2) is for landscape shots of the Golden Eagle and also were the Fox will pass through, I used my 500 for this
You can also use your converter but I never did
4) Plenty of spare memory cards and batteries required, remember in cold weather your batteries will run down faster
If we are lucky we may get a chance of seeing the Northern Lights, I missed it by one day aggh, so a wide angled lens and tripod is required if you want to get a possible shot of this
Camera Plates are in the hides so you will just require a gimbal head or ballhead for both windows, beanbags are supplied but are not ideal
I placed my 500 on my Gimbal and my 100/400 on my ballhead, having 2 Gimbals is better so if you can borrow one its worth doing so
We will fly to Stockholm then to Skelleftea
We will meet at Skelleftea airport or in the small departure lounge at Stockholm, it is important we all get the same flight from Stockholm to Skelleftea as we will be getting picked up at Skelleftea airport and then have an 80 minute drive to our accommodation which is at Kalvtrask
More info will be given nearer the time
Cost of flights is around £300 return
The accommodation is in a wooden framed farmhouse in the village of Kalvtrask, Northern Sweden.
You will be staying in a farmhouse with shared facilities. You will have a shared room with a cot style bed and more or less living out of a suitcase for the duration on the workshop
This is not hotel accommodation and is on the basic side. The house is very warm and clean and comfortable. I had no complaints and the home cooked food on the evening was excellent
Please Note. A single room can be arranged at an extra cost of £50 per night
Transfers to and from Skellefteå Airport, accommodation, all meals, tuition in the hide, transport to and from the hide.
Flights, extra accommodation you may need, food whilst travelling, alcoholic drinks, travel insurance.
It is essential you have travel insurance to cover any unforeseen eventualities on this trip
A £500 deposit is required to secure the booking with the balance payable on the 11thSeptember 2019
Plenty of warm clothing, base layers, long johns, mid layers or a good quality fleece
Gloves and Hat, torch
The hides have either a gas fire or a log burner in them so you can always take of some layers when in the hide
The currency is the Swedish Krona. I cashed in £100 and only spent about £30. There is nowhere to spend any money on Kalvtrask. I would just use your debit or credit card if you want to buy any food or drink at airport
