Aviemore Workshop - Winter Wonderland

Join me in the Cairngorms National Park for a 2 day / 3 nights workshop photographing some of the Cairngorms most iconic birds and mammals, including the Mountain Hare, Crested Tit, Snow Bunting, Red Deer and more

I’ve been visiting the Cairngorms for many years photographing these species, and have run many successful trips in this beautiful wilderness. Each 2 day workshop is limited to a maximum of 3 guests so I can give everyone my full attention, thus enabling you to get the very best out of your day.

New for 2021 will be the option of extending the workshop to 3 days / 4 nights and spend the day looking for Ptarmigan

Itinerary

Arrival evening – we will meet up and have a brief chat about the next 2 days and what you need to bring with you.

Day 1 – Mountain Hare.

After breakfast we will have a 45 minute drive to the location of the Mountain Hares. Weather can play a major factor in locating mountain hares, but once we have located them we can then begin our photography. This may entail a 45 minute walk up hill.

Mountain Hares often like to spend their days holed up in small burrows, especially in snowy conditions. If we locate one of the more approachable ones, we will aim to spend quite some time photographing it as it goes about its daily routine of sleeping, stretching, grooming and so on.

Day 2 – Crested Tits, Snow Buntings and Red Deer

After breakfast we will have a 15 minute drive to a private location for Crested Tits. I have a 100% strike rate of photographing these iconic little tits but be warned, they are extremely fast!

I take my own props and feed with me, so I can set up in the best possible places for light, enabling us to get the best shots possible. We will also have a lot of Coal Tits and Chaffinches around as well as other woodland birds.

After we have photographed the Crested Tits, we will head off to a location for Snow Buntings. These are often sighted in January / February, but this is highly dependent on the weather.  We will spend a short period of time with the Snow Buntings before heading off on a 45 minute drive to an outstanding location for Red Deer

Day 3 (Optional) – Ptarmigan

After breakfast we will have a 20 minute drive and head out for the day in the mountains looking for Ptarmigan, this can consist of upto a 90 minute walk in both directions, some snow grips (Yaktrax) are advised
