Photograph Britain’s largest mammal during the annual Red Stag rut in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

This is an outstanding opportunity to photograph this magnificent mammal in their natural habitat. We will be looking to capture the Red Stag Deer, on their rut, bellowing close up and at distance with the Highlands in the background, we may even be lucky and get some action shots.
I’ve found over the years that the Red Stag is often more vocal early morning and late afternoon so if you have some landscape equipment, in addition we can also make use of some spare hours during the day and will visit a few well know locations in Glencoe, for example.
The breeding season, or the rut, occurs from the end of September to November. Stags return to the hind’s home range and compete for them by engaging in elaborate displays of dominance including roaring, parallel walks, and fighting. Serious injury and death can result from fighting but this only occurs between stags of similar size that cannot assess dominance by any of the other means. The dominant stag then ensures exclusive mating with the hinds.
