Following booking with Paul he ensured we had all the necessary details on where to meet him, what the terrain would be like to the Hides and even down to the lenses we would require for each hide. We were not disappointed.
The setup of the hides is amazing set in mature woodland and providing opportunities to photograph the wonderful red squirrels up close. Both hides are well equipped and Paul was on hand to keep plenty of food supplied for the squirrels. Our favourite experience of the day was at the reflection pool hide, we couldn’t get over how close the squirrels were coming to us. Some wonderful images were taken here. There was also the opportunity to photograph the squirrels leaping and sat on moss covered stone walls. It was a privilege to be in their presence.
Paul has the perfect knowledge, personality and friendliness to make the experience a memorable one. The whole day was superb and we will be definitely repeating it next year. We would have no hesitation in highly recommending the red squirrel hides and Paul to our friends and fellow photographers. read less

As the ‘reds’ did not come back, I took some shots of siskin and buntings hovering near teasels: they are very quick but with Paul’s guidance and his excellent knowledge of the birds and their behaviour I came away with 2 shots I was really pleased with – the icing on the cake.
Paul is such a nice guy and I can highly recommend his hides and red squirrel workshop. A huge thanks Paul for all your effort, advice, skill and professionalism. read less

The hides and the private forest are well set up and maintained with trees, logs, perches and branches for the squirrels to pose on in the woodland area. Squirrels arrive as Paul is putting food out for them. As well as photographing them they are fascinating to watch. Just as one buries a nut, the next squirrel along digs it up and runs off with it! A short distance from the hide, there is an area with moss covered stone walls and logs that the squirrels run along giving you some variation for your pictures. Paul has just set some perches where the squirrels jump from one to the other, giving still more variation.
When you enter the reflection pool hide you find yourself at eye level with the surface of the pool and its not long before the squirrels follow. They arrive so silently that it is often a surprise when you see them. You really have to stay camera ready as these creatures are very speedy. Here you have the chance of some amazing shots but not really much time in between to review your photos. Don’t worry if you miss a shot though, there will be another squirrel along very soon.
Paul was a great host for the day. He is an experienced and knowledgeable photographer who provides guidance and tips along the way. His familiarity with the squirrels and their routines means he is able to direct you to where they might go next and suggest the shots you might get there.
All in all, this was a fantastic experience which I would highly recommend. Shame the drive is so long, otherwise, I would be back next week!! read less

I was so thrilled to constantly see around 8-10 squirrels coming a going, and they were obviously very habituated to Paul, who had placed logs etc in suitable places then tempted them with nuts and seeds. It really worked, and we came away with hundreds of shots. I’d recommend going for time in both hides as, whilst very close to each other, they both offer quite different photographic opportunities. Paul was a very good host, and always tried to give the best experience possible. Highly recommended. read less

However, I can safely say that the photos I’ve taken are some of my favourites I’ve ever taken, and so far I’ve only worked through a fraction of the 4 and a half memory cards I filled.
The squirrels were around (and even on) the hide pretty much constantly while we were there – one particularly bold individual took to running across the front of the hide in front of us, and even paused in front of us a couple of times trying to work out what we were doing. There’s no shortage of woodland birds visiting the pool as well – I managed my first ever close up shot of a Coal Tit which I’ve been trying for in my own garden for 3 years now without success!
I’ll definitely be returning to the Red Squirrel hides in the future! read less

I had the most amazing day with Paul photographing the red squirrels at his North Yorkshire woods. There were so many squirrels, which were fascinating to watch, each with its own character. Paul was a great teacher and gave me loads of advice to get the best possible photographs. I have a lovely set of images and it’s a day I won’t forget in a long time – literally a dream come true. I’ll definitely be back. Thank you Paul.

We had a fantastic day, with his squirrels literally eating out of his hand.
Pauls was great, offering advice and help whenever needed, his attention to his guests and his understanding of the wildlife was brilliant.

Absolutely loved my day photographing the squirrels with Paul, particularly the jumping platforms and reflection pool. Paul has clearly spent a great time and effort building his hides and perches, and was on hand throughout the session to advise on camera gear and settings. Had the genuine pleasure of a day’s 1:1 workshop with Paul in his red squirrel hides on 5th April. The rain did not put a dent in the enthusiasm displayed by either Paul or the squirrels. Paul has constructed a fabulous setup to enable novice photographers like me extract the most from their time with the squirrels. I will definitely be back for another day in the forest.
As a bonus, picked up a copy of Paul’s book – superb quality images and printing.

Received your book A Year in Nature today Paul. Before seeing it, I thought it was a bit expensive, but having received it, it’s worth every penny. I expect to refer to it before shoots as well as just browsing through it in the future for the sheer pleasure of it.
Looking forward to our next visit in the summer with the brown hares, squirrels and little owls, when I hope to emulate some of the challenging images from the book. Well done!

I was so excited to learn that my copy of A Year with Nature was on it’s way and it has exceeded my expectations. It’s full of fabulous photographs and I feel a connection to some of them, having used Paul’s red squirrel and little owl hides. What really sets this book apart from other wildlife photography books is Paul’s descriptions of how he got the shots and the sharing of his camera settings – interesting and useful. There is a broad range of mammals and birds represented in the book, with shots captured in the UK and abroad. I love it! It’s great inspiration for the aspiring wildlife photographer.

Not only is it a book full of amazing photographs but the narrative about the wildlife, about how Paul took the photos, about what camera settings he used and the locations takes it a step above any other photography book I’ve ever read – and I’ve got many.
Paul should be very proud of it. I will certainly do my best to publicise it on social media over the next few days. I really hope it is the huge success it deserves to be.

Paul is knowledgeable and genuinely enthusiastic about getting you successful results. Of the three days in the beautiful surroundings there was not one without at least one really successful photo opportunity. Though that can never be guaranteed in wildlife photography much was down to Paul’s determination to find opportunities. Paul tracked down Otters, buzzards, hen harrier, fly catcher, stonechats, deer, to name just a few of what we see. The amount of wildlife was incredible . Pauls knowledge of wildlife is so impressive. During my stay we went to Staffa and Lunga where the puffins totally take your breath away along with the scenery. My wife and I have just returned from Mull having spent 4 days with Paul on his Mull wildlife workshop. Paul’s knowledge of the islands species and where to find them is first rate.
The otters were the highlight of the trip simply because our group had an unusually long close encounter with a mother and cub. We were privileged to spend over an hour with the pair and thousands of photos were taken between us. We went back a couple of days later and encountered a dog otter, again we had close up view and spent about thirty minutes watching him hunt, feed and preen. Another one of Pauls sites also gave us a view of an otter.
The trips to the sea eagles and puffins were amazing. To have a private group charter to photograph the eagles makes all the difference when it comes to moving around the boat and getting the desired shot. The Lunga puffin trip gave us extended time on the island after everybody else had left which was incredible.
Other trips around the island produced sightings of red deer, wheatear, stonechat, great northern diver, pipets and the list goes on.
Paul was always on hand to advise about camera settings, exposure, shutter speed etc. Thoroughly recommended as are his wildlife hides, the red squirrel hide has to be the best in the UK by far.
Many thanks from us both for an exceptional trip and we will see you again soon.

I had been wanting to visit ever since I saw several videos on Youtube that featured the hides and the squirrels, and I was not dissapointed.
I spent a decent amount of time with the squirrels and they are obviously extremely well cared for and looked after. They are very friendly and inquisitve and are great subjects to shoot.
There are a lot of woodland birds that visit the hides, too, giving you plenty of oppourtunies to boost your portfolio and get some great shots.
Paul gave me some advice to start of with for camera settings and a bit of a brief on the squirrel behvaiours to get the best shots, then left me to it for the rest of the day.
I definitely recommend a visit. Paul is a great guy and is very passionate about these animals and puts a lot of time into making sure they thrive.
I am already planning a return trip to the hides.
The added bonus is that there is no phone signal, which means it is just you and the critters. Bliss.

Had a great time at Paul’s red squirrel hides. Paul is a great host and keeps Seeding the locations throughout the day. You can get some stunning images from all the hides, but probably my favourite was the reflection pool. Fortunately, for us, the weather conditions were excellent during the day but even if they weren’t it was a joy to watch the squirrels at play. I’ll definitely return during the winter months.

Arrived home from four days with Paul in Mull. He seems to have a radar ability to find otters and once found he worked hard to ensure we were in the best place possible to take our photographs. We have worked with Paul on a number of occasions and got to know how he marries the welfare of the natural world with the expectations of his clients. Thanks for all your efforts on our behalf Paul!

Yesterday I met, and made a great new friend in Paul Fowlie. whilst photographing the Red Squirrels. The squirrels are not shy at all, in fact I had one visit me inside the hide on more than one occasion curious to know what was going on. and at another time I had as many as 11 within a few yards of me. The photo opportunities are endless though my only regret, as someone who loves macro photography was in not having my macro lens with me because several of the squirrels were within easy reach for quality macro photography.. Lesson learnt, I won’t make the same mistake next time! The setting is wonderful with lovely views and extremely peaceful; you really are at one with nature. Fellow wildlife photographers, if photographing Red Squirrels is on your wish list then this is THE place to go.

An amazing day with Paul and the red squirrels. The hides are brilliant and the squirrels are everywhere, offering great opportunities for pictures. You will certainly get some outstanding shot of red squirrels. The reflection pool offers a totally different photo situation and there is the option to capture squirrels leaping in mid air, something pretty unique and highly recommended.
This is without doubt one of the best photo hides anywhere and if you have the chance go for it, I very much look forward to returning.

One-to-one Red squirrel workshop. What a great day – so good booked another for end of July. A cool day in June with damp conditions – a little drizzle at times but a really great set up for photography, and very willing photogenic squirrels.. So good you could almost say they had been trained! The reflection pool is a must for anyone going to one of these workshops probably the best part of the day. Apart froom the squirrels look out for the bird life as well. Make sure you have enough batteries and memory cards you will need them.

I decided to book the reflection pool hide for the Red Squirrels for Saturday 4th July the day when lock down eased a little and i had the most enjoyable time this must be the best place in the country to photograph Red Squirrels. Paul stayed a while setting up and in case i needed help with camera settings, Paul then decided to leave and said he would be back later in the day.
I soon settled down to take photographs of the reds and at one time I counted 11 Squirrels I have been to hides before but never have I seen so many Squirrels, I soon had over 900 images on one camera and 400 on another so decided to just watch the Squirrels which i did for well over an hour which was so relaxing and there were Red Squirrels there all the time many times I did not know which one to take photo’s of i even took pictures with my phone they were that close.
Like I have said these hides must be the best Red Squirrel hides in the country you have range of back drops to choose from unlike other hides.
Thanks Paul for your time and no doubt I will be back.

First time we had done anything like this and the package we booked included the woodland hide, reflection pool, and the jumping platform. The Squirrels were fantastic, we counted up to ten at the woodland hide, five at the reflection pool and they were darting about all over at the jumping station, in other words we were never without Red Squirrels to photograph. The woodland hide was ideal, great views on to logs, tree trunks etc with nice clean backgrounds to get some great shots, the reflection pool was amazing and the photo’s we got were brilliant. We really enjoyed the jumping platform and thanks to Paul got photo’s that we never imagined we would ever get. Paul himself is really easy to get on with and really knows his photography which he will help you with if needed. His passion for the Squirrels really shines through and he did everything he could to to give us a great experience. Chaffinches, Coal Tits, Siskins, Redpolls and GS Woodpeckers were also seen, would we go again?, definitely, we will be booking again later this year.

We would like to start by thanking Paul for an absolutely brilliant and informative day at his incredible hide. On arrival we were greeted by several squirrels bounding around accompanied with the sound of a pair of cuckoos calling to each other, wow.
My wife and I spent the day in both the woodland and reflection pool hides. The woodland hide is fantastic with more than enough room along with excellent visibility from both front and side windows which allow you to photograph the squirrels on well positioned ‘perches’. Both short focal length and zoom lenses are recommended for use in both hides as the squirrels can come very close to the windows. The chances of excellent shots are readily available as the squirrels are all over the place, so much so it is hard to pick which one to photograph. We can definitely confirm that all the time we were there at least 5 squirrels were present at any one time with in excess of 10 on several occasions.
The reflection pool is absolutely fantastic, well lit and adorned with low growing plants and moss around the edges along with strategically placed rocks and tree branches/logs for the squirrels to sit on, at one point we had 5 sat around the pool edge.
We have spent many hours photographing squirrels at various sites in both Scotland and England, Paul’s hides are by far the best and most exhilarating we have been to, so much so that we would definitely rank it as one of the best nature up close experiences that we have ever had.
The experience was so enjoyable with so many images to capture that we have booked to return in a couple of weeks to try and get images of the squirrels running along fallen tree trunks, moss covered dry stone walls and bounding along the woodland floor.
If you love to see and photograph red squirrels then this is most definitely the place to visit, we cannot recommend this hide experience enough, thanks again Paul and we’ll see you soon.

My first thanks go to Boris for easing the travel restrictions, and then to Mr. Paul Fowlie for a truly spectacular day. Pauls knowledge of his ‘patch’ and of the subject species showed as he decided when to move and where to move to. The original booking date matched Lockdown day and It is a shame that the waterfalls that were in spate when the trip was booked suffered from the driest March to May period on record, That gives me a reason to return. Thanks to an email from Paul, suggesting some urgency, my target species photography has resulted in a unique record of a special period of the species. life. I feel very privileged to have spent a day with Paul and look forward to many more. I am cautious about giving to much detail about my trip as I worry that Paul could struggle to match the experience he gave me. Many thanks Paul, a brilliant day

Result!! Paul is open for business once again!! And although Paul has suffered financially, no income & no help from the government, his dedication to maintaining the hides & adding new features, hasn’t wavered. Six Red Squirrels at once visited the Reflection Pool whilst I was there. And they kept coming regularly. But that’s not all. Birds galore. A Female Great Spotted Woodpecker landed on the tree in front of the hide. Chaffinch by the dozen. Lots of Coal Tits stopping by long enough to get some great shots. And todays special treat, A Crossbill (sorry, Paul. Didn’t mean to rub it in) that landed on the side of the Reflection Pool. I didn’t get a photo of it on the side, my sudden movement, hey I was excited, scared it off into a nearby tree, but I managed a shot of it in the tree. Now there’s a reason to go back again. So a fantastic day, lots of Reds and Paul is always good company. So give your support & book a day as soon as. You will go away with huge smiles & some great photos.

On the day we booked with Paul to do photography in his squirrel hides it was raining hard. When Paul met us, the first thing he said was, ‘Are you around tomorrow?’ When we told him we were, he immediately offered us space for the following day.
The next day brought an improving picture and gave us shots better than we could have hoped. For six hours the squirrel activity was both constant and illuminating. Paul shared our excitement and worked hard to ensure we got the best shots possible. He was amusing and informative, and genuine in his desire for us to get the most out of the day. He illustrated some of his tips on framing and cropping by showing us some of his own back catalogue.
The whole day was memorable and rewarding and we owe Paul (and his squirrels) our gratitude for an unforgettable experience.

I had another great workshop with Paul on 2nd July, this time the red squirrels 1 to 1 workshop. Paul is a great photographer and tutor who, as always, gave well over 100% effort to ensure the workshop was a great success. His 2 red squirrels hides are really well set up and within a short space of time the ‘reds started to show and I got many really nice shots before moving on to the reflections pool. A few more nice shots before the couple of ‘reds’ disappeared early but the hide seemed awash with different types of birds, many young: nature at its very best and a joy to experience whether you’re a photographer or not and so peaceful.

As always after a trip like this there is the ‘fun’ of post processing and as my wife, who isn’t a photographer, was able to capture some great shots with her point and shoot (albeit an upmarket one) I have those to do as well. .. but it will be well worth it and I can always accidentally delete those shots she took that are better than mine 😎 Thanks again for an enjoyable, fun day.

We called in for a red squirrel day to break the drive back from Scotland to Sussex and I was very pleased we did! Weather conditions were very overcast which was a concern but we needn’t have been bothered by this. After a slow start in the woodland hide, activity levels increased with at least two kits and several adults feeding allowing us to get some great shots. The reflection pool was just fantastic and we came away with a huge number of “keepers”. Oh yes, and we had some good fun photographing jumping squirrels but this would have benefited from better light conditions. A long way from Sussex but if circumstances permit, I would definitely hope to return. Thanks to Paul and his friend Seamus for looking after us

I spent a wonderful day with Paul at the two squirrel hides, woodland and reflection pool. I had driven up from London, so both Paul and I were worried in case the squirrels didn’t turn up. We needn’t have worried. as soon as they spotted Paul, the squirrels were out and about and we weren’t without them from 9am to 2pm. The photographic opportunities are excellent and varied but just watching the squirrels is fascinating. Paul knows these animals very well and is able to tell you what they are likely to do next, giving you a heads up for the best photos.
The reflection pool is just amazing. We were very lucky as, despite the day having started with rain, sleet and snow, by the time we went to the pool we had blue sky and sunshine. The light and colours were just brilliant. The squirrels were inquisitive and cheeky, with some of them getting so close that a reflection was out of the question and a portrait shot was in order instead.
Paul is a very genial host who really knows his stuff and is happy to provide you with advice and tips to get better shots along the way. His care for his forest and the creatures living in it is to be applauded.
I highly recommend the red squirrel 1-2-1 day and if it wasn’t such a long drive, I would be back very soon. I loved it and have many, many photos to share with family and friends.

Paul was quick to reply with what dates were free and I soon booked my day. He was extremely accommodating being kind enough to give me use of all set ups including the reflection pool which I hadn’t booked as the week leading up the trip was freezing cold and we assumed the pool would be frozen.
The set up is just about perfect giving you plenty of chances for many different shots. I’d never used a jumping set up before and it turned out to be set up so well it was pretty simple to use.
The reflection pool is the jewel in the crown of this place though. I got the majority of my best shots using the reflection pool.
I highly recommend booking some time here, I will be again when then summer months come round.

I bought a day with Paul at his hides as a Christmas present for my husband. We’ve photographed wildlife all over the world, but never seen a red squirrel up close, nor well enough to photograph. I was hoping that this day in Paul’s hides (the woodland and the pool hide) would be a good day, but it wasn’t – it was superb!!
Highly recommended. .

Had a great day with Paul at his Red Squirrel hides, My expectations were exceeded within minutes as the squirrels were abundant from the start. The set up there is excellent and Paul has clearly put a great deal of time and effort in getting the conditions perfect for attracting the little red cute things. The weather was ideal, snow on the ground and sun in the sky, so I was very lucky.
As a bonus there was plenty of woodland birdlife as well, so sometimes it was difficult to work out what to shoot as there was so much going on. Paul spotted a Goldcrest and helped me get some decent shots of a bird that is difficult to photograph. Paul clearly knows his stuff and I got much more out of the day as a result.
Strongly recommended. 😄

The location and hide itself are just wonderful, and Paul obviously spends a lot of time and thought into setting up the area to provide some great photographic opportunities without affecting the squirrels natural behaviour. There’s one thing however that he can’t control, and that’s the UK weather. It rained torrentially for much of the day, meaning the chances of smooth reflections were few and far between. However, I’d recommend this site whatever the weather – the squirrels and woodland birds aren’t at all put off by the rain and were around the hide for almost the entire time I was there. I filled four and a half memory cards and it’s going to take me ages to work through all these images, though even from glances at the back of the camera while in the hide I’m confident that some of these pictures will turn out to be some of my favourite images. Paul gave me some great guidance and tips on composition and post-processing, and was great company through the day. And oh well, I’ll just have to visit again in search of slightly better weather conditions and that elusive reflection shot!

Went on a trip with Paul to Aviemore area. Had a great time and learned a lot under his guidance. Love his work. Just take a look at his Pine Martens in the ‘mammals’ folder. Everyone is a winner.

Nice work Cousin. Your photos touch the essentials of each subject. Really love the Scottish Highland images, especially the current Home page image. I guess it is of the Highlands. Keep producing this excellent work. You deserve to be appreciated by a wide audience.

An absolutely SENSATIONAL experience working with Paul. He is a true artist and master of his work. Emphasis on Artist! He took my Photography to a whole other level. If you are looking for somebody to teach you how to use your camera properly then look no further than Paul.
He is patient, uses terminology that you can understand and builds your confidence so that you are comfortable to go and take your own brilliant images. His love and passion of photography rubs off on you so be prepared to not want to put your camera down afterwards

Had a great day out in the Lake District with Paul on a 1 to 1 Landscape Workshop. He is a very accommodating guy & knows some very nice spots for good photographs. He is pacient & very knowledgable.
I came away with some great pictures & a lot of confidence. I would definitely recommend Paul’s services. You never feel rushed & he is happy to stay at each location trying different camera angles & filters etc. until you are happy with your results. Many thanks once again Paul for a thoroughly enjoyable day!

Hi Paul
I took my first nervous step into wildlife photography on your Yorkshire Dales Wildlife Tour and could not have asked for a better tutor. You immediately put me at ease, advised me on settings and chose some great locations. There was so much for me to take away from the day, such as taking test shots after setting up at each location, regular checks of the highlights and the need to know how to change settings quickly and react quickly. Your fieldcraft and knowledge of the area were essential and helped me to understand how different birds react, how nature moves on quickly, etc. and the need for patience.
I enjoyed my day immensely and was impressed with the results I got from my camera and lens, thanks to your guidance and choice of locations. The day flew by and I came away feeling much more confident and really enthusiastic to develop my skills and knowledge.
As a l client, I also appreciated and thank you for the safety of your driving.
I understand that I was your first client for this particular workshop and I feel privileged. I wholeheartedly recommend the workshop to those interested in wildlife photography and wish you every success for the future.
